Muslims that constantly complain about Sunni-Shia posts taking over their dash should be reminded that Shias aren’t the ones attempting to push their beliefs down your throats. Shias are pretty much unanimous in agreeing to disagree, most of us simply don’t care what you believe or who you revere. As long as we are free to practice our religion, we have no worries.

Time & time again Sunnis have risen in attempts to ‘bash our beliefs’. In the Subcontinent prior to the 1900s we really didn’t do anything. We simply did our own things, without interfering with yours. Obviously once your top scholars began to scapegoat us and release page upon page of anti-Shia treatises we would feel obliged to debunk lies about our religion.

Sunni-Shia debates are so prevalent today only because of your people who can’t accept other beliefs. So if you are legitimately annoyed with Sunni-Shia debates, instead of whining about it, you should attempt to quiet your foolish scholars..

That’s funny….I’ve been trying to shut up fucking loud mouth religious scholars since I was a wee little kid. Better things to spend time on than. Also hating on haters is too much fun to pass up. YOLO!

Much needed. My exasperation with that arrogant tone really made me wash my hands of trying to deal with politics and Arab people. Keep fighting the good fight Mehreen.

There is something particular about the supposed ‘secular’ and ‘liberal’ rhetoric some Arabs - especially in the West - use for Pakistan. The supremacist tone never leaves. It lingers there, it injects itself into the discussion. It’s a very specific kind of mannerism used which is arrogant, insulting and commits the same generalization that usually European/White ‘experts on regional politics’ of the UK and US do. I also find it very interesting how this supposed ‘progressive’ stance on politics taken up by self-proclaimed Arab ‘humanists’ is just a shiny way to look down upon Pakistanis like they usually do - even more hilarious is how many of them can’t even fathom the extremely diverse ethnic, religious, political, social, historical makeup of this country which makes it genuinely difficult to study Pakistan in an objective, nuanced way. We’re talking about a country that consists of 180 million people. It takes time to work around the socio-political realities of Pakistan. Your snappy little Facebook status might look revolutionary to the uninitiated, but history says you’re still a moron.

Considering the wall chalkings, sectarian hatred spreading graffiti, the bomb blasts, the drive by shootings, I would have to say that the degree of religiosity in Pakistan has gone from exotic, to downright toxic.

The picture to take all pictures. You’ve seen Pakistanis burn flags. You’ve seen women burn articles of clothings as a symbol of patriarchal oppression.

Well here we have women in 1981’s Pakistan, burning dupattas under Zia-ul-Haq’s regune as the symbol of oppression they had become. A strike back, against the international prejudice of the inactive Muslim, and the cruelty of domestic oppression against women.

And all in 1981, when people took those lazy stereotypes, at home and abroad, on their face value.

All this, from a wonderful takedown of anti-Valentine’s Islamo-corporate advertising by Nadeem Farooq Paracha.

And the picture is also sourced here, from an edition of “The News on Sunday” from Spring 2009, that dealt with the issue of a video of a girl being flogged, that prepped the ground for the state of Pakistan to take back Swat. That was when public opinion decisively turned against the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan.
